In May, the Club Andino Bariloche (CAB) junior Nordic team members began dryland training. Lola and Julio Moreschi are the backbone of the Nordic program in the region. After communicating with them from Ecuador by email, they welcomed us with open arms to Bariloche and included our family in many CAB activities throughout our time there. Together we organized ski imitation and ski bounding sessions for some of the juniors as we waited for June snowfall.
We did a short video review of the kids' dryland classic and skate techniques.
Do as I say, not as I do (or you may fall flat on your back when you get on the snow).
Kata was a great new member of the group (a convert from the alpine team!). She insisted that we should add a 'samba' dance step to our classic technique.
In June snow began to fall in the higher elevations, so the Club Andino members got together to hike from the base of the Cerro Catedral ski resort up to the Nordic area to do some trail maintenance. The Club has a couple thousand members, most of whom are summertime hiker and climbers, with several hundred kids in the alpine ski program and a few dozen energetic Nordic skiers.
The hike to the Nordic area was about a 10 km round trip, a good endurance outing especially for the little ones.
The chainsaws were malfunctioning, so machetes were the next best thing.
And the kids did their part in the trail work.
Of course, some time was saved for a snowball fight--and everyone made up in the end.
As always, the adults took time out to share a 'mate'--a great tradition that brings people together indoors in the warmth of a home or on a break while spending time outdoors.
